eBay FCC ID Requirement: What US Sellers Need to Know About RF Devices
If you list electronics or other radiofrequency (RF) devices on eBay for US buyers, there is an important listing detail to check: the FCC ID.
In a seller notice sent September 30, 2026, eBay said sellers may need to provide an FCC ID on applicable US listings to show that an RF device is authorized by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for sale in the United States. eBay has also added an FCC ID field to the listing flow for applicable categories.
For resellers, this is a practical reminder to verify product details before you list—not after a buyer asks a question or a listing needs to be revised.
What is an FCC ID?
An FCC ID is a unique identifier assigned to a radiofrequency device that has been certified by the FCC. It points to that product's FCC authorization record.
It is not the same as a model number, serial number, UPC, or IMEI. When checking an item, look specifically for the words "FCC ID" followed by a combination of letters and numbers.
Which eBay items may need an FCC ID?
The requirement can apply to radiofrequency devices offered to US buyers. Common examples include:
- mobile phones and tablets
- devices with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cellular connectivity
- certain radio devices
- certain remote-control devices
This is not a complete list. Whether a particular item needs an FCC ID depends on the device and its authorization status. For the most current guidance, review the FCC's RF device guidance and eBay's FCC ID seller resource.
Where to find the FCC ID when sourcing inventory
Before publishing a listing, check the item itself and the materials that came with it. The FCC ID is commonly located on:
- the product label or case
- original packaging
- the user manual
- the device's settings, often under Legal or Regulatory
- manufacturer documentation
For used, open-box, or liquidation inventory, take a clear photo of the label while you are inspecting and photographing the item. It gives you a reliable record to reference when creating the listing.
If the ID is missing or you are unsure whether the exact product is authorized, ask the manufacturer or supplier. You can also search the FCC's FCC ID database. Do not copy an ID from a similar-looking item: eBay says the FCC ID must apply to the exact product and model you are listing.
How to add an FCC ID to an eBay listing
For applicable categories, enter the FCC ID in eBay's new FCC ID field during the listing flow. Before saving, confirm two details:
- The listing has the correct brand name.
- The FCC ID belongs to the exact item and model in the listing.
Keeping the ID with your sourcing notes, SKU, and item photos makes this faster when you list similar inventory later. It also helps your team avoid mixing product details between look-alike models.
A simple compliance check for eBay resellers
Add this to your receiving or listing checklist for connected electronics and RF devices:
- Identify the exact brand and model.
- Look for the FCC ID on the item, packaging, settings, or documentation.
- Confirm that the ID matches that exact product—not merely the product family.
- Add it in eBay's FCC ID field when the category requires it.
- Save the identifying information with your item record, photos, and SKU.
